Strong Earthquake Strikes Southern Japan; Deadly Blast and Collapse Reported at Kumamoto Shopping Mall

Arizona Asians Staff Emergency crews worked through the night after an explosion at Aeon Mall Kumamoto left at least two people dead, even as a strong earthquake struck Japan. Details about the cause of the blast and the extent of damage were not immediately disclosed.

The earthquake struck on Tuesday afternoon near Kumamoto. Japan’s weather agency initially reported a magnitude of 7.1, while the U.S. Geological Survey later revised its estimate to 6.8. The shallow quake damaged buildings, disrupted transportation and electricity, and prompted a temporary tsunami advisory for coastal areas around the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas.

One of the most serious emergencies unfolded at Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima Town, where witnesses reported a loud explosion and smoke following the earthquake. Part of the shopping center collapsed, leaving workers and others trapped or unaccounted for. Authorities said at least two people were killed at the mall, while additional deaths and injuries were reported elsewhere in the affected region.

Officials said between 20 and 30 mall employees were initially unaccounted for, although casualty figures remained subject to change as rescue crews searched damaged sections of the building. Firefighters, police officers and emergency medical teams continued working amid concerns about unstable structures and additional aftershocks.

The cause of the mall explosion had not been officially confirmed. Initial reports suggested that a gas leak may have contributed to the blast after the earthquake damaged the building, but authorities continued investigating and urged the public not to rely on unverified information.

### Widespread Damage Across Kyushu

The earthquake caused damage across Kumamoto and neighboring areas. Homes collapsed, roads and bridges were affected, water pipes ruptured and tens of thousands of households temporarily lost electricity. Hospitals received dozens of injured people, including some in serious condition.

Authorities also reported people missing at a paper manufacturing facility in Yatsushiro after a large industrial chimney collapsed. Train services were suspended, flights were disrupted and a freight train derailed, although its driver was reportedly not injured.

More than 250,000 residents were advised or instructed to evacuate in affected areas as officials assessed the risk of landslides, structural collapses and further seismic activity. The tsunami advisory was later lifted, but residents were urged to remain away from damaged buildings and continue following emergency instructions.

### Region Still Recovering From the 2016 Earthquakes

Kumamoto remains deeply marked by the devastating earthquake sequence of April 2016, which caused extensive destruction across the prefecture. The latest disaster renewed concerns about vulnerable infrastructure and the long-term challenge of protecting densely populated communities in one of the world’s most seismically active countries.

The Aeon shopping center had reportedly undergone redevelopment and seismic reinforcement following the earlier disaster, making the scale of the latest damage particularly striking.

Japan’s government established an emergency response operation and deployed military personnel and aircraft to assist with damage assessment and rescue efforts. Officials warned that strong aftershocks could continue and that already weakened buildings might remain dangerous.

As rescue operations continued, authorities had not yet released a final casualty count or a complete assessment of the damage. The number of people missing, injured or killed may change as emergency teams gain access to affected areas.
