Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Auckland marks a major diplomatic milestone, being the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in 40 years.

• City Tributes: Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower was illuminated in special colors to welcome the Indian Prime Minister, symbolizing the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.

• Diaspora Enthusiasm: The Indian community turned out in massive numbers, waving the Indian tricolour and chanting "Kia Ora Modi" (combining the traditional Māori greeting with the PM's name). Cultural performances representing the rich heritage of Punjab and Tamil Nadu, as well as a fusion of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, were held to celebrate his arrival.

The visit serves as the final leg of PM Modi’s three-nation Indo-Pacific tour (following high-profile stops in Indonesia and Australia). The primary discussions between the two leaders center on several critical areas:

• Capitalizing on the Trade Deal: The visit follows the recently signed India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). PM Luxon highlighted that 57% of New Zealand's exports to India will become tariff-free from day one, with the agreement projected to channel significant capital and market access between the two democracies.

• Talent Mobility & Education: Discussions are focusing on facilitating easier student visas, academic collaborations, and smoother professional mobility for high-skilled Indian workers to remove de facto non-tariff barriers.

• Defense & Maritime Security: Both nations are working to finalize a roadmap for bilateral defense industry collaboration, focusing heavily on safeguarding sea lanes of communication and enhancing maritime safety in the South Pacific.

• Centenary Sporting Ties & Olympics Bid: Celebrating 100 years of sporting ties, the two countries are exploring partnerships in high-performance sports. New Zealand is also expected to back India's bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

PM Modi noted that this visit is designed to "meaningfully build" upon the momentum established during PM Luxon's visit to India in March 2025, aligning closely with India's Act East Policy and its vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
