Google is expanding Gemini in Android Auto with a new Personal Intelligence feature that can draw on selected Google apps to answer questions while drivers are on the road. The rollout marks another step in Google’s broader push to make its AI assistant more conversational and context-aware inside cars.
Google is rolling out a more personalized version of Gemini to Android Auto, adding a feature called Personal Intelligence that can pull information from a user’s Google apps to answer questions while driving. The update is meant to make the in-car assistant more useful for hands-free tasks and marks another expansion of Google’s AI across its automotive products.
The feature is starting to reach Android Auto users now, with Google saying it will arrive in cars with Google built-in in the coming months. When enabled, Personal Intelligence can connect to selected Google services, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search, so Gemini can respond with more context-specific answers.
The broader move builds on Google’s earlier announcements this year that Gemini would come to Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Google had said in May that Gemini Intelligence would expand across Android devices, including cars, later in the year, and its Android Auto website now says a more helpful Gemini is coming to the platform.
How the feature works
According to Google, Personal Intelligence is designed to handle requests that would otherwise require drivers to switch between apps or remember details manually. Examples include asking for a flight gate and status, finding a restaurant along a route that fits a preferred diet, locating a coffee shop discussed earlier in the day, or retrieving a place from a photo before navigating there.
Google says the feature is opt-in and can be turned on or off in Gemini settings. The company says users choose which apps Gemini can access, and that personal responses are only shared in the car under the conditions Google specifies for each product. If a driver does not enable Personal Intelligence, Android Auto still supports navigation, music, calls and general questions, but answers will not be personalized.
The rollout also underscores how quickly Google is folding Gemini into everyday products beyond phones. Android Auto now describes Gemini as integrated directly into the platform, with hands-free voice access intended to replace the classic Google Assistant experience over time. Google says users who have already set Gemini as their primary assistant on their phones should see the transition automatically as the server-side update reaches eligible accounts and devices.
For drivers, the update could make Android Auto feel less like a mirrored phone interface and more like a context-aware assistant able to connect calendar entries, messages, maps and media on command. Google has not said how quickly every eligible user will receive the update, but the company says the rollout is beginning now and will continue over time.
