Coast Guard searches waters south of Nantucket for missing medical plane with six aboard

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching the waters south of Nantucket for a missing medical transport plane carrying six people, a developing incident that has drawn air and surface crews to the area Saturday. The aircraft lost contact while en route from Bermuda to Boston, according to officials, who have not yet said whether anyone has been found.

The search is centered off Nantucket, where coast guard aircraft and vessels have been assigned to look for the plane in and around the island’s southern waters. The number of people aboard has been reported as six, but authorities have not released further details about their identities, condition or the nature of the flight beyond its medical transport mission.

Nantucket’s location roughly 30 miles south of Cape Cod makes the surrounding waters a frequent area of Coast Guard response, particularly when aircraft or vessels disappear from radar or radio contact over the Atlantic. In this case, officials said the loss of contact occurred during the trip from Bermuda to Massachusetts, prompting an urgent search effort.

Search effort expands off the island

Early reporting from local outlets indicated the Coast Guard had multiple assets participating in the search, including aircraft and boats, while federal aviation authorities were also involved in the response. The Coast Guard’s Northeast District said the aircraft was traveling toward Boston when contact was lost early Saturday morning. Officials have not publicly identified the aircraft model, operator or exact last known position in the material available so far.

As of Saturday afternoon, the search remained active and no confirmed outcome had been announced. More information is expected once officials determine the aircraft’s location and release additional details about the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.
