Leaders from China, Russia, India and other SCO member states are meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, for a summit focused on security, trade, connectivity and the changing global order.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan — Leaders from China, Russia, India and several other countries are gathering in Bishkek for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit, a high-level regional meeting focused on security, economic cooperation and the shifting global order.

The summit is being held on August 31 and September 1, 2026, and coincides with the 25th anniversary of the SCO, a grouping that has grown from a regional security forum into a broader Eurasian platform involving major Asian powers. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are among the most closely watched leaders attending the summit. Other participating leaders include representatives from Pakistan, Iran, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the host country, Kyrgyzstan.

A Major Eurasian Gathering

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation includes countries that together represent a large share of the world’s population, energy resources and trade routes. Its members regularly discuss counterterrorism, regional stability, economic ties, transport connectivity and cooperation across Central and South Asia.

This year’s summit comes amid global tensions, including the Russia-Ukraine war, instability in the Middle East and changing trade relationships involving the United States, China, India and other major economies. For China and Russia, the SCO is often viewed as a platform to promote a more multipolar global order. For India, it provides an opportunity to engage regional powers while balancing its own strategic interests.

Modi Meets Putin on Sidelines

Prime Minister Modi met President Putin in Bishkek on the margins of the summit. According to the Prime Minister’s Office of India, the two leaders reviewed cooperation in political, economic, defense, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people ties. They also discussed regional and global issues, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. Modi reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward in resolving conflicts.

The two leaders also discussed India-Russia cooperation in BRICS, with India chairing BRICS in 2026. Modi said he looked forward to welcoming Putin to India for the BRICS Summit scheduled for September.

China’s Xi Holds Talks With Kyrgyz President

Chinese President Xi Jinping also held talks with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov after arriving in Bishkek for the SCO summit and a state visit to Kyrgyzstan.

China has placed growing emphasis on Central Asia through trade, infrastructure and energy ties. Xi’s participation reinforces Beijing’s interest in strengthening regional partnerships through the SCO framework.

Why the Summit Matters

The Bishkek summit is important because it brings together countries with overlapping but sometimes competing interests.

India and China continue to manage a complex relationship shaped by trade, border tensions and regional competition. Russia is seeking to maintain partnerships in Asia amid continued pressure from the West. Central Asian countries are working to balance ties with larger powers while protecting their own economic and security interests. The summit is expected to produce a final political declaration and several cooperation documents.

Asian and Global Impact

For Asian communities and readers in the United States, the SCO summit is significant because decisions and diplomatic signals from the gathering can affect trade, energy prices, regional security and international relations. The meeting also shows the growing role of Central Asia as a diplomatic crossroads linking South Asia, East Asia, Russia, the Middle East and Europe.
