Canada shifts Express Entry to reward local work experience, high-wage job offers
Canada is changing its Express Entry points system in a move that will give added weight to Canadian work experience and certain job offers starting Nov. 3, 2026. The changes are expected to benefit many temporary workers, including Indian professionals already in Canada, if they meet the new eligibility rules.
Canada is overhauling parts of its Express Entry immigration system to give more weight to Canadian work experience and qualifying job offers in high-wage occupations, a change that could improve the prospects of many temporary workers already inside the country, including Indian professionals. The federal government says the new rules take effect Nov. 3, 2026, and are meant to better align immigration selection with labour market needs.
Under the revised Comprehensive Ranking System, candidates with at least one year of qualifying Canadian work experience will receive additional points, with even more points awarded for longer periods of such experience. The changes also add points for qualifying high-wage job offers, while the government says it will remove labour market impact assessment requirements for those job offers when used to establish eligibility and earn CRS points.
The adjustment is significant for workers who have already entered Canada on temporary permits and have built local employment records, a group that includes many Indian professionals in technology, engineering, health care and other skilled occupations. In practice, the new scoring structure is designed to favour candidates who have already demonstrated that they can work in the Canadian labour market.
What is changing in Express Entry
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said the new labour market integration factor will sit alongside existing CRS criteria, which assess candidates on factors such as age, education, language skills and foreign work experience. The department says the eligibility requirements for Canadian work experience are not changing, but the way those experiences are rewarded in the points system is being updated.
The government has also said the new points structure will apply to qualifying job offers in high-wage occupations, including roles such as engineers and electricians. Eligible Canadian work experience generally must have been acquired in Canada within the previous 10 years in occupations classified in TEER categories 0, 1, 2 or 3.
The policy is part of a broader 2026 immigration reset that also includes category-based selection rounds focused on health care, skilled trades, research, transportation, education and strong French-language ability. Officials say the changes are intended to support economic growth and respond to persistent labour shortages in priority sectors.
For many foreign nationals already in Canada, the shift means that time spent working locally may now carry more value than it did under the previous scoring balance. The government has said existing Express Entry profiles will be recalculated when the changes come into force, and invitation rounds will be paused during that process.
