Bangkok roads flood after overnight rain as more storms are forecast
Heavy overnight rain left several Bangkok roads waterlogged early Tuesday, slowing traffic across parts of the capital and nearby Nakhon Pathom. Forecasters warned that thunderstorms could continue, with a wetter period expected later in the week and the risk of more flooding in low-lying areas.
Heavy overnight rain flooded roads across Bangkok early Tuesday, October 6, disrupting morning traffic in several districts and prompting warnings that more storms could bring additional waterlogging later in the week. The flooding affected key commuting routes in the capital and parts of nearby Nakhon Pathom.
Bang Kapi, Ramkhamhaeng, Lat Krabang and Min Buri were among the Bangkok areas reporting standing water, while flooding was also reported on a route bound for Rangsit and at multiple locations in Nakhon Pathom. In some places, traffic moved slowly, while other sections were temporarily impassable for smaller vehicles.
The Thai Meteorological Department said thunderstorms were expected across 70% of Bangkok and surrounding provinces on Tuesday, with isolated heavy rain and gusty winds. It also warned that rainfall would increase again from October 9 to 13, when Bangkok and nearby provinces could see isolated heavy to very heavy rain.
Flooding spread across major routes
Morning reports described water levels of about 5 to 10 centimetres at Bang Kapi intersection and on part of Ramkhamhaeng Road outside Ramkhamhaeng University. Flooding also remained on both sides of Lat Krabang Road outside Lat Krabang Hospital, while deep water at a U-turn beneath a bridge on Suwinthawong Road in Min Buri prevented vehicles from using it.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of Drainage and Sewerage also reported standing water on several main roads, including Si Ayutthaya Road, Banthat Thong Road, Phaya Thai Road and Pracha Suk Road. In Nakhon Pathom, municipal authorities issued similar caution notices for roads near Lotus, Wat Yai intersection, Wat Klang, Soi 7 floodgate and the Phra Pathom Chedi area.
Authorities said drainage work was continuing as water levels fell in some places, but residents in low-lying areas were urged to move belongings to higher ground and relocate vehicles before further rain arrived. The weather warning added to broader concern over flash flooding and overflows in Bangkok and the surrounding central region.
