American Airlines has announced a major international route expansion for 2027, adding seven new global routes and three destinations to its network as demand for international travel continues to grow.

The airline said the new routes will begin in spring and summer 2027, with tickets available for purchase starting August 31, 2026, through AA.com and the American Airlines mobile app.

New Destinations in Europe

American will add three destinations from Philadelphia:

  • Porto, Portugal

  • Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Vienna, Austria

The airline said it will serve Porto and Vienna for the first time. Reykjavik returns to American’s network for the first time since 2019.

American also said it will be the only U.S. airline offering service to Vienna when flights begin in May 2027. The Philadelphia-Vienna route is expected to operate through early January 2028, giving travelers access to Austria during the holiday market season.

More Flights to Europe and Asia

American is also adding new routes from several major U.S. hubs:

  • Charlotte to Barcelona

  • Chicago O’Hare to Tokyo Narita

  • New York JFK to Amsterdam

  • New York JFK to Nice, France

  • Philadelphia to Porto

  • Philadelphia to Reykjavik

  • Philadelphia to Vienna

The airline will also add a fourth daily flight between New York JFK and London Heathrow, strengthening its transatlantic partnership with British Airways.

What It Means for Arizona Travelers

Although the newly announced international routes do not depart directly from Phoenix, they may still benefit Arizona travelers connecting through American’s larger hub network.

Phoenix Sky Harbor is one of American Airlines’ important U.S. hubs, and Arizona passengers can connect through cities such as Philadelphia, Charlotte, Chicago and New York to reach the new destinations.

For Arizona families planning travel to Europe or Asia in 2027, the expanded network may create more connection options and potentially more competitive itinerary choices.

Travel Demand Continues to Shift

The new routes reflect changing travel preferences. American pointed to interest in European summer travel, cooler-weather destinations such as Iceland, and Japan’s cherry blossom season.

The airline also said it will use aircraft such as the Airbus A321XLR, Airbus A321neo, Boeing 787-9 and Boeing 777-200ER on the new routes, depending on the market.

As international travel continues to rebound and evolve, major airlines are competing to offer more nonstop access to popular and emerging destinations.
